Meet the Team

A Church is a community, and therefore it relies on the whole congregation, not just its leaders, to ensure things keep running. Here are profiles of some of our members and leaders.

Meet the Team
Stephanie Shepard

Rev. Stephanie Shepard: Rector

Born and raised in the briar patch of the Lower Mainland, Stephanie was messing around in the Church from an early age. As a leader in the Anglican Youth Movement in the 1980s, she travelled and met with young people from around BC and the Yukon and assisted in the campus ministry at the University of British Columbia.

Upon graduation in 1987 with a BA (Honours) in psychology, she worked as a Health and Safety advocate for a Local of CUPE while in UBC’s extensive library system. All the while, she was feeling a tug to serve God in a different capacity. Stephanie returned to study for the priesthood at the Vancouver School of Theology.

Five years, one husband and a child later, she received her Master of Divinity in 2000 and was ordained in the Diocese of New Westminster. Stephanie has served at St. Paul’s in the West End and is currently the rector of St. Timothy, Burnaby. She is married to Byron Jang and has two daughters, who are eight and twelve years old.

In her spare time, Stephanie loves murder mysteries (especially those that kill off a cleric), quilting, and mucking about in the vegetable garden. Her vices are dark chocolate and shopping jaunts to IKEA, which she has been known to give up for Lent.

Stephanie went on sabattical in 2009, and her reflections on her pilgrimage can be found here.

Gordon Arthur

Gordon Arthur: Webmaster

Gordon grew up in England, and passed through stages as a Disciple and a Presbyterian before becoming a member of the Church of England in 1998. He emigrated to Canada in July 2006, and was warmly welcomed into St. Timothy's the following Sunday.

After gaining a B.Sc. in Physics from Birmingham University, he spent 22 years as a television technician. Towards the end of this period he went freelance, and returned to college part time. He gained an M.A. in Philosophy of Religion and a Ph.D. in Theology from King's College, London. He now works as a freelance copy-editor, specialising in academic papers and business documents.

At St. Timothy's, he is chairman of the Communications Group, and Webmaster. He assists Stephanie at the altar on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, and has served as Synod delegate, Parish Council Secretary, and member at large (his current position).

Gordon enjoys sport, particularly football and Formula 1 motor racing, and admits to cheering for the New York Jets, Michael Schumacher, and Ferrari. He enjoys snowshoeing and mountain hiking on the North Shore. He became a Canadian citizen in March 2011.

Caroline Chady

Caroline Chady: Parish Council Secretary

Caroline is a born and bred Anglican from the UK and has very happily made St. Timothy’s her home since October 2004.

After some months of “church shopping” where she was regularly shown a room in a basement to hang out with her then-young daughter, she was at first shocked and then delighted when she walked in to St. Timothy’s and was invited to join the other children and families on the mats in front of the altar.

Caroline has never looked back. She now has three children who can all be found near the front of the church each Sunday morning.

When Caroline is not helping at Sunday School, or writing minutes for the Council meetings, she is by turn teacher, homemaker and passionate language learner.

She has long ago given up any thoughts of scrapbooking, knitting or quilting, but she enjoys walking in the mountains, tinkering on the piano and she harbours hopes of picking up a fiddle again one day.

Kate Turcotte

Kate Turcotte: Treasurer

Kate recently returned to her Anglican roots after being raised in the United Church of Canada. Living in North Burnaby with her husband and two young boys, she works as an injury prevention researcher, having received her Masters of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa.

She has been a member of the Parish since 2002, is involved with the Kids Church, served as Warden for one year (2008/09), and has been the Parish Treasurer since 2009/10.

She is currently a member of Parish Council, the Leadership Team, the Pastoral Care Team and Phone Tree, and the Communications Team. Along with other members of the Auroras (St. Timothy's Women's Group), she attempts to swim once a week, and create interesting knitted and crocheted hats and blankets.

In her spare time, Kate dreams of a clean and clutter-free house, a well tended lawn and garden, and time to pursue more artistic endeavours.

Brenna Turvey

Brenna Turvey: Youth Delegate to Synod

Brenna grew up in Burnaby where she was homeschooled by her father until grade ten. She attends university part time and is majoring in English. Her favourite job was in a bookstore.

In her childhood and teenaged years she played sports and spent time with friends and with her sister. Her family usually spent summer holidays camping in the Cariboo. Brenna’s kin are South African and she has visited KwaZulu Natal three times.

Brenna attended Christ the King church throughout her childhood, starting in 1987, and was constantly at the church on Sundays and during the week. Many of her childhood memories and imaginings are sited at the church.

Having missed church as a teenager, she decided to come for a visit in her late teens; then became a part of St. Timothy. Over the past few years she has attended the LAMM and Cornerstone ministries at SFU. She is a member of the parish council.

Brenna enjoys creative writing in her spare time. She likes to meditate in lakes and in the ocean and to take long walks anywhere on the west coast.
